Realizations Lead to Resolutions
We’re almost two weeks into the new year and this is about the time when people start to forget about their glorious resolutions… Contrary to the collective conversation, January is not the time to start making insane changes and wild resolutions.
Resolutions are dead, anyway.
If you’ve been on the spiritual path for some time, you’ll feel this truth to your core. Your personal practices most likely teeter between honoring moon cycles and dancing with nature’s rhythms. Given we are in the middle of winter, doesn’t it seem a bit odd to be planting new seeds?
Anyone with eyes can see the ground is basically frozen...
The trees are stripped bare…
Hibernation casts a sleepy blanket over society…
Yet, societal conditions continue to push you to believe “new year, new me” slogans. So, where does the audacity to start new goals and wipe the slate clean originate anyway?
Rewind… It’s all made up, anyway.
There are many legends and tales recounting the passing of time. From the Mayan calendar to the changes made from the Julian and Gregorian calendars, it’s all a man-made creation. Where April once marked the start of the new year and is now dubbed as a holiday made for pranksters, there is something to be said about starting the new year at the beginning of Spring.
The history of these changes is quite interesting. In a world ruled by appointments and alarm clocks, we often forget that time is just a silly construct made up by mankind.
Let go… You deserve it.
Knowing that time is a construct and that the history of calendars moves through its own ebb and flow, how do you feel about your new year’s resolutions? Did you set any? If you did, are you still showing up to them? If not, there is definitely a reason—and no, it is not because you lack the self-accountability to stick to your guns. Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that your body is begging you to relax, let go and rest. You have definitely earned it.
Realization naturally leads to resolution.
If resolutions are dead, do we just give up all hope and let ourselves go? Definitely not. Dropping your resolutions only makes room for the realizations to flow through. Our culture pushes us to constantly go after the next big thing, but maybe it is not so much about what we’re after, but rather how we go about it.
|Resolution (n)
-a firm decision to do or not to do something.
|Realization (n)
-an act of becoming fully aware of something as a fact.
Individuals who set a resolution have the purest intentions. However, there is often something critical missing. For example, if my house were on fire, my resolution would obviously be to put it out. But if I’m so focused on the resolution, I may very likely miss out on the realization. Rather than expending all of my efforts to put out the fire, I might benefit from looking deeper to see where the fire is coming from anyway. If the fire were coming from a faulty electricity line, then I’d need to know that in order to successfully resolve the issue. Realizations naturally lead to the resolution of all goals or issues.
3 Approaches to Realize and Resolve
What is at the root of my desire for change?
You don’t just want to start that business to make more money, right? Heck, there is more to it than just making a difference in the community. What is your why beneath the why?
Do I REALLY need to make this change?
This is a bold question. I know. In a world fueled by forward-thinking visionaries, the thought of sitting still to question a move seems villainous. Ask it anyway. You might find yourself “motionless” for a week or two, but the wisdom that comes from it might just sky-rocket your next move to 2023 and BEYOND 🙂
